FIRST IMPRESSIONS!!
November 13, 2006

After reading about the Wii for months this weekend provided for many of us our first hands-on experience with the system. Though it was a limited sampling, what are your first impressions about the system based on whatever little you were able to play?

Well, coming into this console launch I was not at all enthused about the game ‘Excite Truck.’ Needless to say I was not impressed with the system based on that demo game. While the game did highlight some features of the new controller, I don’t believe Nintendo meant for this demo to be the “clincher” in terms of interest and sales.
Having used Window Media Center Edition for several years, the wireless pointing device isn’t much of a novelty; and actually becomes somewhat cumbersome while standing in a store.
That being said I’ll pass judgement on the Wii after playing a game I’m anticipating (Madden and Wii Sports) in the comfort of my own home.

This is a unbiased report from someone playing the wii for the first time. I stripped off any fanboyism I had…Any partiality to the X360 and went into gamestop this morning…..
Ross and I played excite truck(I have the pics on my camera to suuprt my claim and have even sent these to Ln for verification)….the control takes some getting used to …I can’t say I really enjoyed controlling the vehicle by moving the control to and fro any more than I would have just using a directional pad. For me it was …eh !…Maybe it was the game..But I was less than blown away. The graphics look more like a N64 than a gamecube. The controls where very responsive though, ross backed up about 30 ft away from the console and never lost any control. We went to the Wii Menu and messed around with the Mii character creation tool alittle…it’s a neat little thing. Also of not is how you use the wiimote as a pointing device—also kinda nifty. The wiimote is much smaller than I expected…the size of a chalk board eraser.
I want to play zelda…That game might make me a believer. But, for right now I’m undecided and don’t want to pass a final verdict.
In other news….I bought Viva pinata….Now this game might be what makes Karina play video games…It’s basically like animal crossing (for you nintendo fanboys out there). It’s a very cutesy game but I think it’s going to be very addictive as well.
Well …that’s all I got.My suggestion would be to play the Wii before you buy one. i’m not saying your not going to like it…but trying before buying is always a good motto.

I can say like Eric, that I don’t really know if the motion controller is the absolute best, but maybe it was just that for a racing game it is not the best. They really needed to have a different game other than Excite Truck to demo the Wii’s capabilities. I was really suprised by the range of the controller too. Although i stepped back like 25-30 feet, the controller was really responsive.
We didn’t get to try any of the Wii channels like news and such because the Wii wasn’t configured or connected to the Net.
I am still a little on the fence with the controller ergonomics, seemed a little small, but it was decent, probably just have to get used to it.

I didn’t bring my id but Kwesi Awuah had played and said it was fun and hard. Though he said it was hard he said it would take some time to get used to. I will agree with everyone else that the excite truck is not a good game. But it shows you the capabilities of the wii. They need games that let you hold the wii it’s normal way. Also the nunchuck attachment. Madden is a great game to show people how nice the wii is. I was so surprised how small and light the wii is. By the way I am literally dying to play Zelda.OHHHHHHHHHHH! I need to play Zelda.66

Mii channel was fresher than I thot
Someone before me had made a convincing Michael Jackson
That had me literally falling down laughing
Excite Truck was not very “exciting”
The graphics in ET were MUCH worser than I imagined
[ And the animations in the Channel Menu made it clear that the SYSTEM is capable of better ]
Pointing at the sensor bar tripped me out at ferst
I forgot to try the Photo Channel
I LOVED the rumble
It was subtle and refined
I LOVED the B button
I HATED that I forgot to stand further away from the kiosk
and, therefore, lost 4 STRAIGHT RACES to Gersh
I was surprised that the clerk was knowledgeable, helpful, and positive about Wii.
[ That is exhibit A of evedence that Wii IS a success. It has already won over store employees, a feat they never managed to accomplish with the GC. Store employee hype is what sold 90% of XBOX's]
Anyway, nothing negative but the choice of game on demo
Still getting it this sunday at launch..
P.S. I recommend buying one now… WITH A FEW GAMES YOU ACTUALLY LIKE!
I also recommend playing against someone.
Nintendo games + people = fun
nintendo + person = not so much fun

Also, the Mii Channel was surprisingly fun not for creating a Mii representation of myself, but for creating easily recognizable celebrities. There were some pretty creative characters. (Such as a hilarious Michael Jackson guy, and a Samuel L. Jackson.)
In seven days I’ll give a more comprehensive post based on more games.
